Coach Ikeuchi Yutaka and the Unsolved Puzzle at U20 Vietnam: Relegation Risk Ahead

At the training ground of U20 Vietnam, one early September afternoon, the atmosphere is heavier than usual. Two consecutive losses to North Korea (0-3) and Palestine (1-2) have put the young team in a must-win situation against Iran on September 6 to avoid relegation in the Asian U20 qualifiers. But what is more worrying is the disjointed play, a problem that former VFF official Duong Vu Lam has bluntly pointed out: Coach Ikeuchi Yutaka lacks experience and does not fully understand his players. The context of U20 Vietnam is quite special. While other youth teams like U23 Vietnam (under Kim Sang Sik) and U17 Vietnam (under Cristiano Roland) have achieved impressive results, U20 is struggling right from the qualifiers. This contrast raises questions about the Japanese coach's ability. Duong Vu Lam, who spent many years with Vietnamese youth football, offered sharp observations on his personal page: “U20 Vietnam’s coordination is not smooth; they don’t play like the national team, U23, or U17. The team may have misjudged opponents and failed to utilize squad strengths.” The core of the problem lies in tactical execution and the coach’s integration with players. Ikeuchi Yutaka, though theoretically sound, lacks practical experience in Vietnam. He does not solve problems skillfully and seems not to grasp the psychology and strengths of each player. A prime example is 1m95 center-back Dinh Quang Kiet – a V-League veteran with strong aerial and defensive ability – who is underutilized. “Dinh Quang Kiet can mark top strikers, but the coach hasn’t used him well,” Duong Vu Lam noted. Other experienced names like Tran Gia Bao and Nguyen Le Phat are also misplaced or not given proper opportunities. A contrarian view is that the lack of naturalized players weakens U20 Vietnam. But Duong Vu Lam rejects this. He points out that U23 and U17 succeeded without naturalized players. “Youth football reflects the training quality of each nation. U20 Vietnam’s poor performance is due to tactical, gameplay, and form issues, not the absence of naturalized players.” This places responsibility squarely on the head coach. Indeed, Vietnamese coaches like Hoang Anh Tuan and Kim Sang Sik succeeded by understanding Vietnamese player psychology, creating a comfortable environment, and maximizing collective strength. Ikeuchi Yutaka has yet to do that. The takeaway is a warning signal for Vietnamese youth football. If U20 loses to Iran and is relegated, the impact on this generation of players will be significant. Can Coach Ikeuchi adapt in time? Or will VFF need to make personnel changes? The answer will come after the match on September 6. But clearly, betting on an inexperienced coach for a talented young squad is a high-stakes gamble.
